CDD Editorial: Election Postmortem I fended off complaints by other candidates filed with the Florida Elections Commission for 1-1/2 years after the November 2006 elections. This is why I remained quiet during the Coral Bay elections. I did ask Sandi McCormick on two different occasions to approve a campaign flyer at no cost to her. Sandi Declined any help, saying, “After seeing what's been done so far, I'm going to decline your offer namely because I don't want them dragging you into any possible complaints.” In October 2006, I ran an editorial (click here), after withdrawing from the contest myself, recommending that Coral Bay voters look at how the candidates kept their home as an indicator of how they perceive acceptable standards for Coral Bay. It makes sense, for example, that if the candidate keeps their landscaping shoddy, then they won’t really notice or care if the landscaping in the CDD owned common areas is unkempt & weedy. I never once used another candidate's name in the perfectly legal editorial. As revenge for the editorial, one of the candidates distributed a two page flyer that used my name, not his, 20 times and referred to me in the third person another 17 times. 37 times he referred to me while referring to himself only 8 times in his same campaign flyer. That was Saturday prior to the Tuesday election. My response was a 4 page flyer proving my editorial was true. By Monday night the flyer was written, assembled, printed, folded and distributed. John Hall and Ron Gallucci helped me distribute the flyers. The irony of it all? I was the one left to defend against four allegations that were all dismissed while, John, |

Ron, and the other unnamed candidates did not. Now you may realize why it is difficult to get people to run for public office. The truth is, in my opinion, and judging by the dismayed looks on my Coral Bay neighbor’s faces, that we elected the wrong candidate. Several Coral Bay neighbors have even apologized to me unnecessarily because they appear to be aghast at what happened. Coral Bay elected “Tony The Taxman” to office for another four years. He earned that nickname for opening his mouth and revealing his ignorance. In my March-April 2007 editorial (click here), I quoted Tony who said, “I am their biggest fan!” “said, Tony Spavento an appointed CDD board member who has never been publicly elected. He is referring to his loyalty to the CDD management company~.” Tony whole heartedly endorsed the same management company that raised our taxes 119.2% in just four years. They still employ that company in Islamorada at Coral Bay where he is a director. In the May-June 2007 editorial (click here), Tony put his foot in his mouth again when he wrote in an email, “Double taxed? My friend in a small condo in Coral Springs pays nearly $300 a month in Condo fees, TWICE what we pay in Coral Bay. They get NO FEMA money.” (That is a quote from an email sent out from the chairman of the CDD board on April 3, 2007). “WHEN YOU READ BETWEEN THE LINES: What he is saying is he |

doesn’t think we are over taxed and believes we could or should be paying more.” Tony obviously didn’t know at the time the condo fees include homeowner insurance, trash, and often other expenses we have to pay on top of the CDD. Then there is when Tony, once again put his foot in his mouth when he wrote, “~ realtors pushed people into home they couldn't afford, just so the realtors could make themselves fat off the unnatural high prices.” “In fact, such realtors have brought the world economy down and have possible destroyed the prominence of America itself as the world financial leader.” “Such realtors offer people loans after banks turn them down.” Ok Tony, thanks for the entertainment. Trust me folks, I have studied real estate for approximately 14,560 hours in the last four years because I love what I do. What I’ve learned is that the State, and City lawmakers screwed us over with this extra layer of government with a hand in our wallets. And, I have learned that the people elected to run this tiny layer of government don’t understand that. These people seem to derive satisfaction by thinking they are doing something important while just sitting there holding up progress, oblivious to exposing us and themselves to negligence, conflicts of interest, and civil rights charges in a job that should not exist, that pays a maximum $4800 per year. It’s in the books folks. If you had time, I’m sure you would read it. Copyright 2008, Velie Real Estate Services, LLC |

In 5 Minutes or Less A Realtor routinely drives around with clients evaluating neighborhoods. Most often, the client has already evaluated the communities and picks the houses in communities they want to live in. I have heard many comments — You can improve the potential value of your community by doing these easy things. And, visa versa, if you are doing these things, you ARE hurting the values of the homes in your neighborhood. 1. Put garbage cans and recycle bins out of sight of the street. Nothing turns buyers off faster than trash & trash cans. Margate code: Trash cans cannot be put out before 5 PM the night before your pick up day, then put away asap. 2. Pick up trash in front of your home or your neighbor’s home whenever you see it including old newspapers, flyers, etc. Your neighbor may be out of town or the house is vacant. If you have a problem with this, remind yourself that it is you and your family’s quality of life and net worth that is suffering. Do it for the greater good of the community. I do. |

3. Pull the weeds out of the landscaping beds. 4. Sprinkle “Weed n Feed” on the front lawn. Your grass will grow and the weeds will die. (less than $10) 5. Trim the grass along the sidewalks and driveway. A weed-eater turned sideways is all I’ve ever used. 6. Spray bleach water on mildew wherever you see it. 7. Paint your mail box (or bleach it). 8. Keep your commercial vehicles put away out of sight. And, If your vehicle needs painting, please paint it. This is a few hundred dollars but trust me, it affects the quality of life of your neighbors and your family. Some of my most choosy clients have even counted or commented on trucks, or any “blue collar” type vehicles as we drive through neighborhoods. Copyright 2008, Velie Real Estate Services, LLC

ABOVE CHART-WE PAY MORE FOR NOTHING Coral Bay Column: Using my own taxes to demonstrate, if you live in Coral Bay your taxes are $4,404 per year. Sable Circle Column: Drive onto 441 S and turn right immediately before the hospital. If you bought a home of the same size, at the same time, and homesteaded as my wife and I are, your taxes are only $3,214. Most of Margate Column: Without the CDD and the HOA, many neighborhoods often look nicer than Coral Bay. They have all the same amenities we do. We help pay for theirs but they don’t help us.
